![]() In case you need to keep the convict contained while not cancelling tasks going through the doors (for example if your hammerer is out of the area), the door in the hospital allows you to instead lock one set of doors and leave the other unlocked and "juggle" the convict as you wait for your guards to remember to do their job. There is also a fair distance between the Captain's office and the exit door, which will help more reliably arrest people after convicting them (more on that later). You should also have a lockable door at the entrance of your fort to help with this. The doors allow me to lock down the entire section of the fort if there is a criminal trying to leave after an interrogation or someone trying to leave with an artifact. There are a few notable design features in this. Below that you can see noble suites: the copper one is for my duke/mayor (I have had the Hammerer move into the Mayor's old suite, you may want to build one for him instead if you don't plan to get a baron for a while), the jet one for the outpost liaison, and the billon suite for Stozu Bossungoso, Goblin King of the Dwarves (yes my civilization is basically dead, we have this fort and a cave with 20 people in it in the middle of nowhere surrounded by enemies). The iron room is the artifact vault - the most effective but least fun way to guard your artifacts, but do not be deceived into thinking it is enough on its own. Back up in the top left is the dungeon, which I expanded to be much larger than it actually needs to be. Going back down the right side we have the barracks for The Copper Claws (my city's fortress guard division). Below those in the same corridor, I have the Captain of the Guard suite on the left and the Dungeon Master's suite on the right. To their left is the Mayor's initial suite. Starting from the top right, near the central stairwell, you can see the Manager and Bookkeeper offices. This is the layout of my current fort's "City Hall": ![]() So, here's how I build and use my justice system for best effect. I have found that going against this has worked out best for me. ![]() The "meta" strategy has also involved having weak dwarves so beatings aren't as invariably lethal. So, the justice system is pretty janky, and a lot of people have essentially resigned to thinking that it is better to not have one, or to not have a Hammerer or similar.
